The Republic of Pakistan holds the worlds leading position in terms of the number of transmissions using compressed natural gas. In October 2020, they reached a consumption equal to 5.3 cubic meters per day.
According to NGV Global, by mid-2018, the number of gas-powered vehicles in Pakistan was 3 million and the number of gas stations exceeded 3400. In conditions of population growth and dependence on large imports of oil and petroleum products, a boost was given for the active development of fuel transport for gas engines.
Pakistan took its first steps in this direction in 1998, when the government announced its intention to reuse 100,000 vehicles based on CNG, as well as build 150 gas car filling stations.
Key measures to stimulate the growth of the fleet of vehicles using methane as fuel were the following:
- cancellation of import duties and VAT for 5 years for equipment of CNG filling stations and for gas equipment of motor vehicles
- permission to import used gas compression equipment
- Concessional loans for the construction of CNG filling stations
- cancellation of CNG market regulation
